Cost effective
Decent smoker for the money. Needs lots of mods to make it better at heat and smoke retention, including a gasket, silicone sealant, and extra paint for when the finish starts to peel (at about the 8th cook for me). However, extra parts and an extra thermometer still run much less than a high end backyard smoker.Have learned to cut the splits so that the burn is more even, and the temperature swings aren’t as dramatic. Can keep it at 235 for 40 min. on a single split. When the paint peels, just wire brush and spray on the new layer.

Make sure you do your home work.
Some of the bolts have broken, on the fire box. The damper handle broke off.The bolt for the door on fire box keeps falling off. It is a shame I had to purchase a fire box and smoker tape to help keep the smoke in. Now I have to buy locks for the smoker because the tape does not work that well. The paint is burning off the fire box. The front handle keeps coming out so I had to add some washers. I have been smoking meats on a tin box that held the heat better. You should not have to do all the modifications on this smoker. The one gauge that comes with it is in the wrong place since all the cooking is down on the grate and not in the top part. You will have to get a thermometer to read the temp. At the great or drill extra holes to put in a expensive gages.

Good smoker for someone looking to try smoking with wood for the first time.
Took many tries to learn how to control the temperature but is worth it for the added flavor and fun compared to a pellet or electric smoker. I use it with lump charcoal and mostly hickory and apple wood. Doesn’t have the best seal and metal is on the thin side, but for the price it works great and is a great place to start before investing a lot of money into a higher end smoker.

Quality controls issues
The pit was a bit of a challenge to assemble and we have owned and built numerous pits. First time we used the pit the side by the fire box bulged out-still does. Not sure if this is quality control or material defect. As an overall pit it’s a good design. It’s only used as a smoker, we had a pellet grill – sold it.

Is quite possibly missleading, at least to me: it is a product of charbroil…..and made in china. It is very heavy and well built none the less

Leaks smoke everywhere,
I would think that for an $800 smoker and a well know issue…(yes its not a competition smoker)… I would of thought it would leak smoke less! I coated the inside with vegetable oil and preformed the season burn. Not even 3 hours later with the dampener open and the the intake baffle at 1/2 open, the paint and top half of the burn box is now paintless. The structure of the smoker seams sturdy, but the screws and bolts given in the kit are JUNK! I’ve seen better quality on hot wheel cars.

Terrific Smoker/Grill for the money!
I was a little hesitant after reading some of the reviews, but after exhaustive research (and my unwillingness to spend three or four times as much for other Smokers) I pulled the trigger on this one. I. LOVE. IT!Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t perfect but for the money it is great. It does leak smoke, but then again I am not sure I could control one that was totally air tight. I did the recommended mods with the squeeze gasket material on the fire box and then the tape around the openings. Still leaks, but does the job just fine.I love the cooking space and the fact that the fire box can be a quick little grill or use the main cooking area and grill out for a group! I have grilled a bunch of chicken in the main area, steaks for the wife and I in the fire box as well as smoked salmon (absolutely amazing!), ribs (I am still perfecting) and our Thanksgiving Turkey (Wow! Delicious!) The reverse flow really kept the temperature even throughout the cooking area. I added a second thermometer for easier control. Also, after my first bout with the salmon, I started cooking with a charcoal starter and then moved to straight wood chunks unless I needed a serious heat boost. The design of the smoker really kept the meats from getting TOO much smoke flavor! The only real issues I have is that my chimney for starting the charcoal doesn’t fit in the fire box very well so it is awkward to start it and dump it in. Also, the door for cleaning out the ashes has HUGE gaps around it which you have to take into account when adjusting the vent for temperature. The last thing to say is that I followed the seasoning guidelines to a “T” and have not had any issue with paint peeling yet.Highly recommend for the amateur/pro-wannabe smoker/griller!

Decent Smoker, Quality control is lacking
I really wanted to love this smoker. I had a hard time keeping the temperature up, there is a lot of smoke leaking around the lid. I ordered a smoke chamber gasket from ok joes directly that did not arrive on time.Issues:The lid does not sit flat, I think a gasket will seal it. The chimney has a bit of a gap, will likely need some high temp silicone, I am less concerned about that. on one of the leg mounts, the weld missed 80% of the part. It appears the warranty does not cover shipping, this thing is over 200lbs, so I decided to not call OKJoes and make a claim. If I ever get a welder, I will fix it.The firebox is designed to fit inside of the main unit for shipping a smaller box, two round halves bolted together. the corners of the firebox have a tack weld that sticks up on every corner, a lot of users seal the box with silicone, I ordered some 1000deg 1/8th inch firebox tape. this was the perfect thickness to seal the firebox due to the welds in each corner. I need to order more for the top door. the cleanout door has gap all the way around it preventing the fire from ever being shut down. if i get a welder i would like to put a flange around it, there is no easy fix to get a seal.Good things:this is a heavy smoker, it should last a long time.I like the enameled grates. I like the reverse flow design. the fire box is large, once the unit is sealed more I think the fire will require less care.I really wish the quality control was better at the factory and this $600 smoker did not require more money to make it really usable. The paint on the firebox started to burn off after the first use, it would be nice if it was enameled like some grills are. I plan on using this all the time.

GET LAVA LOCK & You’ll be Happpy
I love it but if I didn’t do the gasket and silicone I would have sent it back immediately as it still puffs a little smoke with the countermeasures in place. That aside it puts out the quality product you would expect from a smoker in the 4 digits. Char just needs to include the gasket a gel with the bit box.UPDATE: Been running it as a recreational Que’er for 6 months and change. Not disappointed in the least. This is the bridge until I get my completely custom job and damn if it isn’t doing a GREAT JOB. I’m still annoyed with the gasket and Lanalock nonsense as I need to reapply the gasket but worth the inconvenience.4th of July 2022 block party it had a fire for 30 hours straight. 61 pounds of brisket, 50 pounds of pulled pork, 6 racks of ribs, 4 chickens, some egg plant, tofu, watermelon…all was restaurant quality

Service delivery team were excellent !
Glass on temp gauge was cracked. No problem as was only cosmetic. Was brought to my attention immediately with apology from the team. Not their fault so all was OK.Ja’Marcus Poole and Mason K were very polite and got to work right where I needed the finished product to be. Didn’t have to move it at all which was very conscientious AND courteous of them. They had everything needed for assembly and were finished way before I expected. Prior experience and confident working team left me in good hands and never a concern.Hats off to Ja’Marcus and Mason for a great job done well done for us. We’ll be thinking of them while enjoying the smoked goodies being cooked on our new grill.THANKS guys !!!Enjoyed your company and learned a few things from y’all too !!!Larry BabinMontgomery Texas

Great smoker

Going into my 3rd year with this smoker. It has been amazing with some small upgrades. Thicker than the tin can options but not 1/4 inch. Still does a great job.

OK quality overall, if you’re into DIY, buy the offset Longhorn and mod it yourself.
If you’re going to order this, I’d recommend going ahead and buying the Lavalock gasket for sure, and some clamps to shut the cooking chamber door. I welded the seams on my fire box shut so they wouldn’t leak, but supposedly the high temp sealant will work just as well. It’s much easier to just order all of this and do it before you ever cook on it.The charcoal basket is pretty handy. I can get about 3-4 hours on a half basket of briquettes. I have to let them all ignite before closing the door or they don’t light cleanly and keep putting off that nasty ignition smoke. Probably switching to lump will help, just had quite a few bags of briquettes to burn through.Honestly, I just wanted this because it was reverse flow, but after buying it, I think buying the standard offset and the aftermarket conversion kit may be better quality than this one. I wish the baffles were heavier, they seem to be very thin gauge. Overall, the quality is ok for the price. If you want something super nice you’ll have to pony up about $1k more for a Lang or something heavy gauge.

Best of worst, worst of best.
Sat on the fence a while with this one, but realize now it’s really good value. I did have to gasket the firebox and seal the door, but seeing the disasters in the <$500, knowing I'd be looking at $1200-1500+ for something better, this is a very affordable* option. I oil up the firebox every 8 hours of cooking or so, and the paint peels very selectively, which makes spray repainting easy. If you don't wanna do little bits of work, just get a pellet. If you wanna not pay a fortune, but smoke some food, get this. Also recommend a thermal blanket, the walls are a little thin, but I'm up in altitude and it's cold this time of year. 3 people found this helpful

Good starter off-set smoker
I read a lot of reviews and watched several videos on this smoker prior to purchasing. I added the fireblack gasket to the the firebox and main lid using high temp silicone. With the mods the smoker works perfectly and the reverse flow keeps even heat. I did not have any leaks for smoke. I was able to get three 14lb briskets to fit with no problem. The only issue was a slightly bent cooking grate during shipping, but it was on the edge of the grate and I was able to put it against the side where you don’t notice. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that you have to do some modifications and pay for shipping. But for $650 it is a great smoker for the price. I would highly recommend to watch videos on how to assemble and make the mods before you put it together.

Great smoker
This is my first smoker and it is pretty good. I did have to buy some high-temp gaskets to fit around the lit and smoke box because they lids don’t create a perfect seal. It is worth the price and it is very heavy duty. When you do your burn-in, the paint will blister and fall off all around the smoke box but as long as you take care of it, clean it and keep it dry that is only an aesthetic issue. After the burn-in I did my first smoke and it ran very well. It still had some issues with smoke escaping places that it shouldn’t which is why I am giving it 4 stars but other than that, it was easy to use and for the most part, it held temp fairly well.

Great smoker
So I waited till I actually used this smoker to write a review. I assembled it per directions except I stood it on end to loose assemble parts by myself. I was able to put fire box on by myself this way. I used the padding included to help. I used the high temp silicone to seal the firebox, and to the body. I also used gasket but I attached to the lid instead of the body for looks. I used fingernail polish remover first then alcohol to clean, maybe alcohol would be enough. Then I rubbed all including firebox inside with lots of. canola oil let it overnight. 24 hrs later I started a fire w lump charcoal and let. It go for a few hrs. to season. A huge shout out to Mad Scientist BBQ on you tube. If you are having problems you are probably doing it wrong. This is a stick burner meant for hardwood. You need a good fire with red hot coals but not too big. Lump charcoal not briquettes and real hardwood. I haven’t used the basket and just burn in the bottom of the firebox. After seasoning and appropriate fires no paint issue so far. So your hardwood needs to be 2” x 10” aprox and added every 45 min 1 or 2 at a time after a good coal base. Vents wide open or even door open to achieve good air flow. White smoldering smoke is bad and hot grey blue smoke is what you want. If you don’t have the right fire you need to fix it. As for the clamps I bought them and don’t know if I need them yet. This is not a grill it’s a smoker so only use in the firebox. Buy a grill if you want a grill. If you want a 2k smoker buy it but for less than $700 this one works pretty darn good.

Definitely requires two people..
So I’m not your average housewife. I assemble anything we buy whether it’s furniture or grills etc. because I actually enjoy working with my hands. That being said, this grill requires two people to set it up, normally not an issue, however this thing is SOLID. I almost (possibly did) break my fingers by trapping them in the smaller door trying to assemble it by myself. I managed to fully assemble it alone however it’s been a month and my fingers still hurt. Heavy, cast iron feeling doors. Definitely recommend this smoker. It is super well built, and extremely sturdy. My husbands current smoker is a thin, flimsy metal where as this beast could take out an army if weaponized lol. Highly recommend, you won’t be sorry, unless you’ve learned nothing and try to assemble it by yourself lol.

Very Pleased Especially at this Price level!
Overall I am very happy with this smoker. I have not had an offset smoker for some years and really missed tending the fire and controlling the cook. I have a Big Green Egg and a Yoder pellet smoker and love cooking on them both, but missed cooking 100% with wood. This thing is built very head duty. I did follow other people advice and postings that did the modifications and I am so happy I did. The only smoke coming out the smoker after the modifications is light blue smoke out of the stack. I highly advise anyone to do the modifications. You won’t be sorry. I have attached pictures. The only reason I did not give this smoker 5 stars, is that the paint peeled right off of the firebox the first couple of cooks. And I never got above 325 degrees.

Awesome Buy for the Budget!!! 5/5 Stars
Ladies and Gentlemen,I just have to say that the Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker is a great smoker at an unbeatable price. I love my new smoker! I looked at other models that were 4X the cost of the Oklahoma Joe, and I am glad that I saved the money. The smoker was delivered successfully with no damage (a tear in the box) and put together and seasoned all in an afternoon, ready for some delicious BBQ smoked on it the next day. When assembling the smoker I modified the stock assembly to make a more efficient smoker that keeps its heat and drafts properly–even on a windy day. The materials used keep a very nice looking unit looking professional and clean. All-in-all the Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn Reverse Flow Smoker is the best value for a budget and cooks well. I plan on making a review video and taking photos and will post for others to see.Be Warned! There will be some cooking involved and I am not responsible for watering mouths and ruined smart devices.Smokey

Heavy duty smoker, very well built.
My only complaint is that it leaks a bit of smoke around the doors. Maybe there’s a way to better seal them, ie a gasket kit. This is probably true of all large sized reverse smokers, but they take A LOT of charcoal, wood chunks, logs, etc. You will easily go through 2 or 3 large bags of charcoal to smoke a pork butt for 10-12 hours at 250.

Fantastic smoker
I had an electric master built smoker and it finally died. I decided to GM with the reverse flow Oklahoma joe and it has not disappointed. I’ve smoked everything on it! I end up adding a log about every hour to keep the temperature between 225-275. The dampers work well to control the temp. So far I love this smoker. I will say the paint on the firebox does not hold up. I also used the sealant and the latches recommended for this smoker. Extremely happy!

OUT OF THE BOX REVIEW
Not hard to assemble. It is pretty heavy so you’ll need help to lift and to attach the heat chamber to the main chamber. Very spacious on the inside. 39″x19″. My only gripe is that there was a bit of rust on the main chamber lid, on the edge, between the hinges, and one of the cooking grates had a bent bar. I’ll update this review once I season and again after I cook on it.

Great product, a lot of Space for a Lot of Smoking or Grilling…
Was loving this as a Smoker, used it once as a grill and all the Paint began to peel on the inside, mind you I did Season this grill, as I do with all my grills. Gonna contact the manufacturer, this should Not be happening!!!My Mistake, apparently it’s build up from all the INTENSE smoking I have been doing, so it’s NOT Paint that’s peeling, it’s SOOT, mixed with OILS from BBQ…. This thing gives the MOST INTENSE Smoke, i’ve ever Experienced!

Good product with mods
I ordered it on May 22 and it was delivered May 29 at 13:21. Real happy with shipping and delivery. The smoker seasoning was easy and the temperature control is well easier than I expected. I did make mods to it and recommend them. The sealing tape for the lids and the high temperature silicone applied to all the joining points that are bolted together.

I loved this Purchase it works very well! Worth every penny! I would definitely recommend this to a friend or someone serious in smoking. The temperature gauges are off at the very beginning but towards the middle to the end they all start sinking up I would recommend a thermal probe to get accurate temp.

Best lower cost smoker on the market
I have been BBQ’ing for 20 years and wanted an offset smoker for the fun of it. The quality and sturdiness is excellent. IF you watch the YouTube videos and follow the curing and operating advice, this smoker is exceptional. Temperature control is reasonable and the cooking efficiency of a reverse flow is outstanding. Spend the money for a good grill cover.

Disappointed dog is disappointed
Sealed everything…even the screwholes for the handle and it still leaks like a sieve from the lid. And there was a defect in the hot box. I shut everything and the fire was still raging. Got so hot the paint peeled. That picture is after my first BBQ!Called customer service and they referred my to the manufacturer’s 888 #. The manufacturer sent me a new hotbox which is why I’m giving this a 3 and not a 1. Still leaks smoke like a sieve, but it’ll regulate temperature during smoking. Just don’t expect any leftover coal after shutting it down.
