    It’s good for the price

It’s good for the price. However I wish it had a pellet hopper dump and an ash dump. For the price you don’t get any bells or whistles. It does cook great so complaining there. It’s lightweight enough to pick up and put in the back of your truck for camping or tailgating

    Let the BBQ begin

Unpacking the grill took almost as long as assembling, but that’s a good thing right? Well anywho, I have to say it works wonderfully and keeps the proper temperature +/- 1or 2 degrees very happy with this purchase.

Great Pellet Grill! Same as a Traeger as far as I can tell.

The only dislikes is that I wish it made more smoke on higher settings and that you at max temp 450, you really can’t sear on it (unless you buy the special sear plate, which I will probably do). These are the same complaints as for all pellet grills though.

    This is a find

Saw some negative reviews on older models but this was an upgrade to 2020. I took a chance and ordered one. I have really enjoyed this pellet smoker. It’s a perfect size for my use, but may be a bit small if you entertain larger crowds. I only gave 4 stars for temperature control, but at 350 and below is does well and smokes like crazy. Ribs, burgers and steaks are so good. I still haven’t challenged a brisket or pork butt, but have no doubt this grill will handle it!!!!

Z Grills Customer service is 5 stars

There was a minor issue with a part and Z Grills mailed a replacement part out next day. Smoker works well and is well built. I would buy again.

    Works great!

Putting this together took about 30-40mins by myself. Make sure you install the legs correctly. The burn in process is a pain but after that’s done it’s easy cooking! I’ve cooked ribs, burgers, steaks, chicken and tenderloins on this that came out fantastic.

    Customer service

Hinge pin at upper left hand corner of door does not function as required and the door will nor mount. Have e-mailed them several times to remedy this problem and have supplied them with info they (Karen) required but cannot get a response. Their Customer Service leaves a lot to be desired.UPDATE:Z-Grills came through, after much consternation. I finally received a new door for my ZPG700D. Just wasn’t communicating with the correct individual it seems. These grills are really a superior product and we are enjoying ours. Be even nicer now, with a door that works. Thank you for remediating this problem. I can now highly recommend this grill.

    This company makes customers happy!

I originally gave them a 1 star review due to an error in advertising. They have since corrected the issue so I will change my review in kind. I received this grill and the chamber is damaged. I contacted customer service and they are great. They’re sending me a new chamber. I used it once with the damaged chamber and the only issue I ran into was the smoke flavor of the meat. Most of the smoke was escaping out of the damaged spot. Otherwise it was a very good cook. I am very satisfied with the grill so far. I have to give 5 stars for customer service alone!

    Great Grill, while it lasts

    * update – grill had been performing better after we stripped it and deep cleaned. Just have to clean more deeply and regularly than a propane grill, lesson learned.Original – This was an amazing grill… for a couple months. After this it began to catch fire, which was tolerable at first as we could blame it on too much grease, too much heat maybe. However, the most recent one occurred at 225 degrees, during which the fire ran back in to the hopper, causing the bottom to ignite and catch fire. luckily we caught the smoke and were able to put the grill out, but after this event, we just don’t feel safe using it…

A very good value. So far works great

I have had this smoker for about a little over a month. I think it works great. Assembly was a snap. Plugged it in and works perfectly. I do not leave pellets in the system, but the one or two cooks where Int was late, I was able to clean the next day without issue.Like any kind of smoker it takes some time to understand how to control temperature and smoke. We have so far done a duck, sausages, a pichana and a brisket with it. I overshot the brisket and wish I took it off a bit before 205. Getting the temperature to consistently stay at ~275 was a bit difficult. For a normal pit smoker I would normally put meat directly on the rack. This smoker seems to work well if you have a pan below the rack. Fill that with water and you’ll get a nice moist smoke and you can control the bottom heat a bit better than if you’re direct on the rack.

Does what it is supposed to do

I bought this grill for my first pellet grill. Didn’t know if I would like them so didn’t want to invest a ton of money. This grill was reasonably priced in comparison. It arrived in perfect condition. It was well packed so no dings or dents. Very easy to assemble. The instructions suggest two people but I did it in just under an hour by myself even using the little toy tools that came with it. It was raining so I didn’t want to walk out to my shop for some good ones. I cooked some baby back ribs on it for my first try and they turned out very nice. I just smoked some Boston butt over night. I went out every 2-3 hours to check it and the temps varied from 221 to 232 ( set temp was 225) so was pleased with that. The pellets fed very well although I did stir them when ever I checked on it because I had read about the pellets bridging when I was researching pellet grills. Overall, I am quite pleased with this grill

The Z GRILLS ZPG-550B 2019 is an amazing smoker/grill for the price!

I’ve had this grill for a little over the week and am loving it. The assembly took about an hour, and that was only because I put the legs on the wrong way so the shelf holes were pointing out. Make sure you’re in a well lit room, unlike me and you shouldn’t make this mistake. The included “startup list” steps you through the first startup and tests perfectly, so make sure you follow the list and you’ll be cooking in no-time!The attached pictures are prime cut beef ribs I smoked on 275°F for 6 hours, and choice cut pork ribs I smoked for 4 hours on 275°F – they both came out amazing! I’ve also used the grill to reverse-seer prime NY Strip steaks, by cooking on 225°F for 45 minutes, then cranking up to high (nearly 500°F) and seering for 90 seconds on each side for a PERFECT medium-rare steak.I’ve cooked beef and pork ribs many, many times and I’ve reverse seered NY Strips countless times, and the best I’ve ever cooked them all was on this grill, NO JOKE! It truly makes grilling and smoking idiot proof, just get yourself a nice digital thermometer and you’ll never mess up. The perfect mix pellets also give a great flavor that isn’t too overpowering like a 100% hickory or mesquite.$9.99 Smoker Thermometer – https://amzn.to/2Gt9iRH$37.00 40lb bag of Perfect Mix Pellets – https://amzn.to/2XdLcjg$13.99 Grill Cover works great – https://amzn.to/2IrDS02You could certainly pay more for a name brand grill, but with the extended warranty and a cheap grill cover, I should more than get my money out of it. I’m also happy with the overall size, as it fits nicely on my covered second story patio.

Incredibly difficult to assemble, terrible temp control, but good bang for buck.

Likes:1) Cost. Very cost effective first step into smoking.2) Durability. It is built well. Very sturdy. Decently thick metal. It does not feel flimsy or cheap.3) Cooking grates clean easily and are durable.4) Nearly no left over ash after cooking. Very efficient use of wood pellets.5) Looks very nice. I like having it out on the patio.Dislikes:1) No temperature control whatsoever. It will dump pellets in and have a soar of temperature, smoke, then dip 20-40 degrees below set temp before dumping more in. I verified with my own temp probes in multiple spots in the grill that the grills own temp control is way off.2) Very little smoke produced. I had to eventually go get a smoke tube that I use for long cooks because the amount of smoke is just too little and very little smoke flavor comes out. I tried multiple brands of pellets and multiple types of wood. All had the same effect, great cook, but not much smoke flavor.3) I received my grill with multiple bent panels for the lower cabinet. Contacted the company. They wanted me to jump through so many hoops sending pictures and serial numbers and filling out paperwork. The proper response would have been to credit me money on their website. Check the reviews here, most of them come with bent panels. These panels are packaged inside the actual grill so these panels are bent before shipping. They have no way of being bent in shipping because the packaging and the panels above them had no damage.Overall: If you need a very cheap, reliable, starting smoker it is not a bad choice. I have seen them dip even cheaper than the price here. I would go with one without the lower cabinet. I don’t store anything down there in fear of having a flare up catch fire. You can save yourself money by not getting the model with the lower cabinet. It will also make clean up easier. You will not get much smoke flavor and you will not have reliable temps on this grill but if you want an easy start to smoking, its hard to beat.

    Received Damaged/UPDATE!

Received my “new” smoker last night. I say “new” because when I was unboxing it this morning I discovered several parts INSIDE interior boxes were damaged. The wheels showed signs of wear, even the grease bucket was dented. It was easy enough to order a replacement and I will update my review once it has been received and used.**Updated 10/26/19**Yeah, I’m a little behind in this. Been too busy actually using my Z-grill to sit down and write about it. I want to start off by saying the customer service for this company was beyond excellent. They made sure my replacement was sent without delay. And bonus! I got one that actually had the seals in place, the plastic bags were not torn, there was no dirt or damage on the smoker. It was NEW!Set-up was pretty easy. The instruction manual and included tools made it simple. One of the legs is about 3/16th of an inch shorter than the other so there is a slight wobble but this was easily remedied with a shim. It actually worked out pretty well with this since I sometimes use it on un-even ground. There was a dent on the handle side of the pellet hopper. This looks like it may have been cause during shipping as there were some scuffs to the box in that area. Overall it does not affect the function and is something I can easily live with. This smoker works like a champ. I have smoked chicken, pork loin, pork shoulder, tri-tip and made jerky. I have grilled chicken, steaks, chops and fish. Have not yet tried baking with it but it’s on the to-do list. There are two negatives that I have for this pellet smoker. The pellet hopper does not have an emptying slot if you want to change out your pellet (hickory for apple as an example). I guess I should have looked a little deeper into this. The second is I should have ordered the big one! This 550 is perfect for just my wife and I. MY problem is I want to use it all the time and would smoke the world given the chance. Overall I am very happy with my Z-grill. I think you would be too.

Could be better but it is a good grill

I bought this grill for Christmas and decided to do a revue after having time to use it. I love the flavor that the grill gives the food and the ease of cooking on it. The grill has a bad design though which is why I didn’t give it 5 stars. First of all the grease tray just drips down in the bottom of the grill and there’s no way for it to be forced towards the opening to go into drip pan. This results from grease everywhere in the bottom that has to be cleaned and is in a hard place to get your hand in. If you’re cooking and using the top grate as well it’s very hard to get to food that’s on the bottom. I’m constantly burning myself while trying to reach between. There needs to be more space between the two grates. If you’re not using the top rack to cook on them there isn’t a problem. I’m my opinion it’s just very poor design and obviously it wasn’t tested well before the product was released to sell. Wish I had bought a different model that has the better drip pan design. Other than these couple of issues it’s a great grill!

    9 Month Later…

Overall, this pellet smoker is great; however, there are some issues.Even with routine cleaning, the ignitor rod falls to do its job after 6 months. The ignitor roof becomes weak and fails to ignore the pellets quick enough so the smoke box fills with pellets causing the pellets to smolder in a thick white smoke that prevents the temperature from rising beyond 90 degrees in most cases. There are a few things that I can attribute to this issue:1) Ignitor rod placement. The Ignitor rod is right under the outlet for the pellet auger, so when it is slow to ignite, the rod becomes smothered by pellets and the lack of air prevents ignition.2) The exposed end of the Ignitor roof is too small or weak to do its job properly as the Ignitor ages.3) I have a faulty Ignitor.I would love to believe the problem is #3. Either way, when this smoker runs out of life, I would probably move on to a more mainstream and reputable brand.

    Excellent Smoker

Love this smoker. The assembly was straight forward and operation is equally easy. It produces excellent smoked food with a prominent and deep smoke ring. The well designed smoke duty cycle is much better than other smokers I have owned, which produces the smoke ring and flavor. It’s compact size requires little storage space or permanent positioning. It’s relatively easy to clean too. The initial start procedure is a bit complicated and time consuming for reasons I don’t quite understand. I’m guessing that it’s a step by step test of the fan unit, feeder tube and igniter. If any part doesn’t operate correctly, it would help customer service to diagnose the problem. Fortunately the process only has to be completed once.

    A nice pellet grill

I have looked at pellet grills for months. Maybe even close to a year. I looked hard at the Pit Boss and Traegers of the world. If you do enough looking, Pit Boss has some real quality control issues. Countless people have to have parts warrantied from the get go. Traegers are good, but can be very expensive. Z-Grills stood out as reliable and well-reviewed. I finally bit the bullet on this one for $500, namely because it is a large grill at this price point.I’ve used it a few times and overall, I am pleased with it.Pros:– Good price for the size (a comparable major brand would be ~$800)– Food turns out well– Temperature stability is very consistent– Time will tell, but these are supposed to be reliable machinesCons:– Only certain temperature settings: I don’t know how I didn’t come across this. This might be the most frustrating part. It only has 5 temperature settings. 180, 225, 300, 375, 450. I thought seeing the dial on the pictures that you could move the dial in between. Nope. It’s not a deal breaker, but probably my main frustration.– It takes a while to heat up. This is my first pellet grill, so I am not sure how it compares, but if you want to cook on “high,” it takes at least 20 minutes to get up to temp.– It is heavy when you put pellets in, and there is no friendly way to move it. The handle is on the pellet hopper, which seems not so sturdy. I don’t leave mine sitting out. I keep it in my attached garage when it’s cool. So this is an annoyance for me.The cons are what brings this down from a 5 star for me. If you can live with those things, I think it’s a good route to go.

    Excellent

Product shipped quickly. The packaging was well secured, it took longer to unwrap and expose product then it was to assemble with great instructions. First light, perfect, first burn perfect. First smoke of 2 pork chops with dry rub, delicious ???? This 600 is perfect size for 2 to probably 8 people. On a 32° evening it took about 20 minutes more then expected to get chops to 145° and 10 minutes to get to 450° for a good sear on meat.

    Awesome!

It’s a good budget grill/ smoker . Good for beginners. Sturdy , looks good, I like compact size. It’s does flare up past set temp when new pellets are drop in fire box with the grill temp prob. Then of course goes back to set temp, with separate temp prob in meat didnt seem to effect it temp went up gradually. Other then that me likes , meats turn out delicious!

    Deceiving description be aware

Easy enough to put together even without clear instructions. Temperature control is questionable with upwards of 50 degree swings not 20 as stated. Extremely short grill so if you’re a taller person expect that.Biggest issues for me are customer service at z-grill they don’t answer the phone their online chat doesn’t work and email support is almost non existent in that it takes 2 days to get a response and then they act like the customer is stupid. My issue with this grill is the stated 10 pound hopper is an outright lie. At best it is 5 pounds with the auger full as well as the hopper. So be aware of that if you intend on doing any long cooks you’ll need to babysit.

    Couple of assembly issues

Takes a while to assemble/troubleshoot. Hopefully I can help you with this. I have addressed these issues with Zgrill. First off the screws that mount the legs to the grill are too short making that part of the assembly difficult. Secondly and apparently this happens a lot is the the power connection between the cord and the wiring harness inside the bottom of the hopper comes apart either in shipping or assembly. I would check that before you mount the hopper otherwise you have to take that apart. Otherwise I love this unit it works well and heats up very quickly. Burns very clean and is easy to clean. Other than the assembly issues I would still highly recommend this product.

Assembly of the fire pit and legs very difficult

The fitment of the supplied assembly screws and bolts are pitiful!! Especially the short screw head bolts to attach the legs to the main barrel. Honestly, I am pretty handy with repair work & building items. But this was excruciating and frustrating trying to get the bolts started and tightened correctly. Oh, and my reward for hours of extra assembly time was. When I plugged it in there was nothing, I trouble shooting the problem disassembled the digital unit changed the fuse as instructions said. Again nothing! Called Zgrills they sent me a email with information to disassemble the bottom and connect two wires hidden inside. Works now very well. But unfortunately assembly of this unit was very frustrating.

keep your grill clean and covered waterproof cover

When I first got the grill I found that it was easy to assemble, everything shipped and was packed very good.Just make sure you follow the directions closely sit down and pre-read them before assembling so you understand lay out the parts get to know what is what most important take your time think it out. after I assemble the grill I was anxious to go ahead and get it fired up.I found that I needed to take the switch and move it to shut down and then back to smoke to get the fan to start once I figured this out it was easy to operate. this is not a high-end Grill but A-Affordable grill. and for me it is perfect I have a small family so I do not need a large Grill. So overall I say this is a very good purchase the quality seems to be very good no problem so far have done many cooks.Definitely invest in a cover to keep it dry.

    Zgrills customer support is AWESOME

I’ve had this smoker for a little over 2 years. We had a power surge and lost quite a bit of stuff in the house including my smoker (unfortunately had it plugged in). I contacted ZGrills to try to buy a replacement control board and they asked for a few pictures and the model number and then sent me a replacement for free! Way outside the warranty period and they were the best!

    Works as advertised, but…

Temp control is not accurate in direct sun and high heat. Central Florida area.I had to set to smoker to 180, to get 225-250 temps. This was quadruple verified, by 4 separate temp probes(was testing for hot/cold spots anyways) and an analog oven thermometer(probes and thermometer matched each other W/I ~5 degrees. Easily compensated for, once you know but still less than happy with the product.May purchase something else???

    Great smoker for the money.

Had a electric wood chip smoker at first which I bought during warmer months and it was great, but once winter hit the wood chip smoker failed to get hot enough. Did a lot of research on pellet smokers, plus my neighbors have a Treager, so the smells coming over the fence was incredible. Decided to go with this smoker due to being so much cheaper than the big name brands. The first use of this smoker, the neighbors came over to see what the incredible smells coming over the fence were. Gets up to 400 even at below zero and has opened up so many opportunities for great tasting food. Just had great smoked ravioli, love this smoker. I did find that all pellets are not equal in taste and smoke intensity. Best I have found so far is Lowes competition blend.

Can’t beat it for the price

I waited a year to write this review. And let me say this was a fantastic investment. And that year span, I’ve deep cleaned it once, and cooked brisket, corned beef (also brisket), pork shoulders, ribs, steaks, chicken the list goes on. This thing handles everything I’ve thrown at it and then some. It smokes food beautifully. Bakes and grills wonderfully. It takes a minute to get the hang of especially coming from smoking foods the traditional way with wood and a firebox but it’s by no means a steep learning curve. It has consistent temperature control which when you have small children to wrangle and other work to do means you can set it and forget it only checking on the food when necessary without also having to maintain a fire. If I remember I’ll try and update yearly as we go along.

Easy assembly, I did it by myself in about 3 hours. Instructions were easy to follow. I’m so happy with this smoker. I’ve used it to smoke & to grill; it heats up quickly & is ready to use in about 10 minutes, the food cooks evenly & has great flavor.
